Ah, the balmy breezes off the coast of Greece…just what we need on a blustery Buffalo night. Add in the ABBA songs you love, fun costumes, and lots of dancing (on stage and yes, in your seat) and that’s pretty much a perfect night. Shea’s 710 and Second Generation Theatre has that going on in this production of MAMMA MIA! on stage now to February 1.
MAMMA MIA! is the GOAT of jukebox musicals, weaving the best feel-good ABBA tunes through a two-generation story of powerful female friendship, personal resiliency, self-discovery, and love. Yes. there’s a message in that through line, but be honest, you’re there for the music and boy, does it deliver. Thank you for the music, Allan Paglia, music director and a darn fine band.
Julia Witt as daughter Sophie opens the show on the eve of her wedding, and what a Second Gen/Shea’s 710 debut for her. She powers through “Honey, Honey” with her bridesmaids (Kai Chumley and Lizzie Arnold) and is beautifully wistful in the “I Have a Dream” prologue. Her voice is rich and lush and she captures the ultimate sweetness, too, singing with her potential dads and her mom Donna (Kelly Copps).
And oh my those parents. Copps slays it as mom Donna Sheridan, former disco diva frontwoman of Donna and the Dynamos who stepped off stage to raise her daughter and preside over island’s Taverna. Copps has the voice for these great ABBA tunes, from the fun of the title tune, to her reality-check “The Winner Takes it All” to the sweetness “Our Last Summer” with old beau Harry (Bobby Cooke with a British accent be still my heart), Copps nails it. When the Dynamos (Michele Marie Roberts as Rosie and Bethany Moore as Tanya) reunite, that’s when the party starts. There’s nothing like connecting with old and dear friends, and when they sing like they were born to it and reflect on their hijnx and celebrate the women they’ve become….well, that’s the heart of this story. And dang the tunes again. The Dynamos are singing into their hairbrushes (didn’t we all, and truth be told, don’t we still?) for “Dancing Queen” and they go full on-Dynamo for “Super Trouper.” Moore has her moment with “Does Your Mother Know” and Roberts is manifesting her next destiny when she asks Bill to “Take a Chance on Me.” Absolute pure fun, beautifully delivered.
And then there’s the potential dads…Harry Bright (Cooke), Bill Austin (Philip Faruggia), and Sam Carmichael (Chris Avery) are nerdy-cool in roles that fit them like perfect ’70s cargo shorts. What girl wouldn’t one one or all of them as her dad? Each dad made their moments shine.
The ensemble rocked Michael Deeb Weaver’s choreography on Chris Cavanagh’s beachy set. Lots of fun costumes in sun-kissed colors created the right visual appeal and you have to love the silver sequin-covered spandex that owns the stage in the finale. Good on you, costume designer Lindsay Salamone.
From start to finish, Second Gen’s production on that big Shea’s 710 stage is flat out fun under a disco ball. If the story doesn’t get you, the dance party at the end (stay on your feet and at your seat, this is your time to sing and dance, truly) will keep a smile on your face all night. You couldn’t ask for a better night of theatre.
MAMMA MIA! runs under two hours with a 15-minute intermission. Find tickets at sheas.org (act fast, some shows are sold out already) and check out Second Generation’s website for the skinny on the rest of its fabulous season, https://secondgenerationtheatre.com/
