Theatre Review: “Legally Blonde The Musical” by MusicalFare at Shea’s 710 Theatre

MusicalFare’s high energy production of “Legally Blonde The Musical” is one that cannot be missed. From the opening notes, to the final bows, this cast brings the wonderful comedic energy needed to tell this tale of love and motivation.

“Legally Blonde The Musical” is based off the film of the same name, and tells the story of Elle Woods (Gretchen Didio) – a fashion merchandising student – who decides to apply to Harvard Law School to follow Warner (Alex Anthony Garcia) – her ex-boyfriend – in hopes of winning him back. What ensues is an adventure of self-discovery.

Michael Oliver-Walline directs and choreographs this fun and upbeat production. His choreography made me tired and I was just sitting there! The cast looks like they are having the time of their lives up there on stage and the audience is happy to join them in this experience.

Gretchen Didio leads this show as Elle Woods. Didio brings all the quirk needed for this character to come to life, and does so with authenticity and heart. Her voice is fantastic as she sings the iconic songs “Serious,” “What You Want,” and “So Much Better,” just to name a few.

Sean Ryan does an amazing job as Emmett – the workaholic TA in the law program. He brings a fun innocence to the role, and does so effortlessly.

Marc Sacco is fun as Callahan – the Harvard Law professor –  who has a few ulterior motives up his sleeve in this show. Sacco croons “Blood In The Water” so wonderfully and gets the laughs in “Gay or European.” It is always fun to see Sacco perform.

Kelly Copps does a great job playing Paulette – the hairdresser turned confidant – paired against Bobby Cooke’s Kyle – the UPS driver turned lover – the two get great laughs and have hilarious comedic timing.

The cast is rounded out with a magical ensemble that delights at all times.

One area that I found needed a little attention was the final trial scene. While this is a comedy, I felt that the scene needed to be grounded in reality a little. Everyone in the scene – the judge, the defense, and even the law students – were a little too goofy and relaxed. I think it would have been nice to see a similar presentation like when Elle’s resume was being scrutinized by admissions at Harvard. I think it would build the stakes a bit. After all, it’s a courtroom, not a party.

Overall, this production is a fun time had by all! Do yourself a favor and go see it! You will be glad you did!

Running Time: 2 Hours 30 Minutes with one 15 minute intermission.
