First Look Buffalo continues its exciting season of new plays with the local premier of The Day I Learned to Fly by Wendy Marie-Martin. I found the script to be extremely therapeutic, filled with cliches and positive affirmations. I’m sure you will identify with and/or need at least one.
The setting was avant- garde. Sarah Waechter’s set was minimum, dark, and appropriate. David Guagliano’s lighting design and Roberto Di Donato’s projection designs were aesthetically innovative which created an immersive arresting theatrical experience. Director Jason Francey utilized every inch of the stage in a matter that allowed for a stunning visual. Suellen Coelho’s costumes minimal and easy access.
Because of a harrowing experience Hattie, played by Heather Casseri has an opportunity for lack of a better term to step outside of her comfort zone and become super Hattie betrayed by Kaylie Horowitz. Both actresses were extremely confident and comfortable in their roles. Taking on the role of two or more characters could be a daunting task. The challenge is not how fast you can change costumes but how well you can individualize each character… Well done!
So will she find the courage to rise above and soar hmm? Come see for yourself, in 70 minutes with no intermission. The show runs to February 9 at Canterbury Woods Performing Arts Center in Amherst. Tickets and details at www.FirstLookBuffalo.com
