Shea’s Performing Arts Center has once again become a gateway to magic with Disney’s The Lion King. This iconic production, a stage adaptation of the beloved 1994 animated classic, is an absolute triumph of theatre. With breathtaking visuals, spellbinding performances, and a score that sends chills down your spine, it’s no wonder this show continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
The story follows young Simba as he journeys from a carefree cub to a rightful king, facing loss, betrayal, and self-discovery along the way. The tale is a Shakespearean drama infused with humor, heart, and hope, set against the majestic backdrop of the African savannah. With a runtime of approximately two hours and thirty minutes, including a fifteen-minute intermission, the show balances intense drama with lighthearted moments and unforgettable musical numbers like “Circle of Life,” “Hakuna Matata,” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.”
Julie Taymor’s visionary direction, paired with Michael Curry’s awe-inspiring animal puppetry, is a spectacle to behold. The choreography is nothing short of stunning, seamlessly blending traditional African dance with modern theatrical movements. The wildebeest stampede is a particular standout, with staging that perfectly captures the heart-pounding drama and devastating emotional weight of this iconic scene.
The performances are stellar, starting with the young stars. Bryce Christian Thompson and Julien Villela alternate as Young Simba, while Ritisha Chakraborty and Jaxyn Damasco share the role of Young Nala. These talented young actors deliver with energy and charm, drawing the audience into Simba’s youthful exuberance and Nala’s strength. Mukelisiwe Goba’s Rafiki brings excellent comedic timing and immense talent commanding the stage with every note of her iconic opening chant.
Darnell Abraham is magnificent as Mufasa, embodying the regal authority and tender warmth of the wise king. Peter Hargrave’s Scar is every bit the classic Disney villain, delivering sharp wit and sinister cunning that make him the perfect antagonist. Nick Cordileone as Timon channels a delightful Martin Short energy, bringing impeccable comedy to his scenes.
The ensemble deserves high praise for their physicality, seamlessly transforming into the animals they portray. From the graceful lionesses to the rambunctious hyenas, each movement feels authentic and captivating. The music, composed by Elton John and Hans Zimmer with additional contributions from Lebo M, remains as powerful as ever, adding depth and richness to the storytelling.
It’s heartwarming to see so many children experiencing the magic of live theatre for the first time. While their excitement may occasionally disrupt the performance, it’s a reminder of the joy and wonder this production inspires across generations.
